2022 Auto Insurance Changes

Posted on by Mussio Goodman

The following changes relating to auto insurance in Alberta take effect January 1, 2022:

1. The minor injury cap on compensation for pain and suffering increases from $5,365 o $5,488.

2. Alberta will adopt a Direct Compensation for Property Damage system.  Under this system, your own insurance company pays for repairs to your vehicle when you are not at-fault for a collision.  Previously, it was the at-fault party’s insurance that had to pay for the repairs.  This change does not affect an individual’s right to sue the other driver for damages arising from their injuries.
